Saving Green And Going Green Just Got EasierFor Earth Day, Bridgestone Retail Operations, LLC offers consumer tips to keep your car running newer and greener longer, as well as automotive battery and oil recycling

BLOOMINGDALE, Ill. (April 22, 2009) — This Earth Day, keeping an eye on the family budget and protecting the planet can go hand-in-hand, thanks to Firestone Complete Auto Care, Tires Plus, ExpertTire and Wheel Works. These automotive service providers along with parent company Bridgestone Retail Operations, LLC (BSRO) offer fuel-saving vehicle maintenance tips, in addition to free recycling of automotive batteries and motor oil from do-it-yourselfers.

As part of our commitment to our companys global One Team, One Planet environmental initiative, all BSRO store locations accept drop-offs of used motor oil and used automotive batteries from do-it-yourselfers at no charge, said Larry Magee, Chairman, CEO and President of BSRO. On Earth Day were taking the opportunity to remind our customers of this free service.

All BSRO store locations recycle items such as used fluids, filters and tires. More than three quarters of all waste materials BSRO stores collect are delivered to recyclers. Further, more than 98 percent of the scrap tires collected at BSRO stores are recycled so they can be converted to fuel and crumb rubber feedstock, which is used as landscaping mulch and civil engineering and construction material.

Protecting the environment isnt just an Earth Day project for BSRO, Magee added. This is a part of our company culture, and one way we give back to the communities we call home. Not only do we want to protect the environment, we want to help and encourage our customers and communities to do so as well.

In addition to recycling services, Firestone Complete Auto Care, Tires Plus, ExpertTire and Wheel Works store locations also help drivers keep their cars running newer, longer not only helping consumers save money, but helping them protect the environment, too. BSRO stores recommend that drivers follow these tips:

  • Vehicle Maintenance: Follow the manufacturers scheduled maintenance recommendations and keep the engine properly tuned. A vehicle that has a serious maintenance problem such as a faulty oxygen sensor can decrease gas mileage by as much as 40 percent, and a single misfiring spark plug can cut fuel economy by up to four percent.
  • Tire Check: Check inflation pressure monthly, make sure your tires are properly balanced, rotate tires according to the maintenance schedule and have the alignment checked at least once a year. Not only can properly inflated tires increase gas mileage up to three percent, but they are safer and last longer.
  • Good Driving Habits: Accelerating quickly or stopping abruptly wastes fuel and can also prematurely wear the vehicles engine, transmission, tires and brakes.

By practicing good vehicle and tire maintenance, driving safely and properly disposing of automotive products such as batteries and used motor oil, drivers can not only help protect the environment on Earth Day, they can save money, too.
