Firestone Building Products Company, LLC Launches Environmental Initiative In Wellford Project earns Wildlife Habitat Council certification

WELLFORD, S.C. (Dec. 4, 2009) - Calling all bees, butterflies and their pollinating cousins: teammates from the Firestone Building Products Company, LLC (FSBP) facility in Wellford, S.C., have built you a brand new nectar buffet. Teaming up with local horticulturalists, the Wellford facility recently earned Wildlife at Work certification from the Wildlife Habitat Council for its newly built 2,500-square-foot pollinator garden.

“We are very excited about this new environmental initiative at the plant, and we’re honored to receive Wildlife at Work certification,” said Greg Sharrun, Wellford Plant Manager, FSBP. “Converting a portion of our property from basic turf grass into a wildlife habitat area is another way our facility can have a positive impact on our immediate environment and local plant and animal life.”

Pollinator gardens attract animal life that promote pollination — a process essential to the natural reproduction of plants, including fruits and vegetables.

“Our property enhancement projects have provided a great opportunity for us to reach out and work with the community to do something good for native plant and animal species,” said Janie Simpson, Wellford Plant Quality Control Supervisor, who has been very active in the pollinator garden project. “We are all very pleased to be recognized by the Wildlife Habitat Council.”

Teammates are currently placing bluebird houses in and around the garden, and future plans call for developing informative walking trails through 15 acres of woods surrounding the facility.

Several FSBP teammates, their families and volunteer horticulturalists helped build and plant the garden. The teammates who participated in the project are: Jennifer Abernathy, John Ader, Penny Ader, Dale Blackwell, Regetta Fuller, Maxine Kelly, Janie Simpson, Mike Sims, Tim Suddeth and Ralph Veytia.

The FSBP Wellford facility produces TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) membrane and vacuum formed parts for TPO roofing systems.
