Tires Plus Employees Help Lithonia Woman Clean Up Property Thousands of tires removed and repurposed as part of Bridgestone Tires4ward program
LITHONIA, Ga. (June 19, 2014) – Employees from several Atlanta-area Tires Plus retail stores helped a local woman remove thousands of illegally-dumped tires from her property as part of a volunteer clean-up effort. The Tires Plus employees organized the clean-up event on their day off after learning the woman could potentially lose her Panola Road property because of tires and other debris that needed to be removed.
“Our Tires Plus employees were so excited about the opportunity to help someone right here in our own community, and in doing so, help the environment too,” said Mike Nocilla, District Manager, Tires Plus. “I’m proud to work with a group of people who are so enthusiastic about giving back. Tires Plus, which is part of the Bridgestone Retail Operations network of more than 2,200 company-owned stores, helped remove the tires as part of the Bridgestone Tires4ward program. Tires4ward is founded on the company’s vision of creating a waste-free tire industry and works to ensure that all spent tires, or tires that have reached the end of their usable life, find new life as something valuable. In 2013, Bridgestone recovered more than 10 million used tires at company-owned retail locations across the country, saving those tires from the landfill.
The spent tires collected from the Lithonia property will be sent to another valuable use as part of the Bridgestone Tires4ward program and with support from Liberty Tire Recycling. Valuable new uses for spent tires include being used as material for rubberized asphalt, rubberized playground equipment, a valuable source of energy to make concrete, new tires and more.
Bridgestone supports organized community clean up events nationwide through the Tires4ward program, collecting tires that are recovered at those events at no charge. Since the Tires4ward program launched in 2012, Bridgestone has supported more than 300 community clean-up events, and recycled more than 85,000 used tires that were recovered from streams, waterways and communities nationwide.
